About Jim

I grew up near Timm's Hill, in northern Wisconsin. I think the biggest reason I've been a woodworker my whole adult life is that it keeps me connected to the woods I lived in and wandered among as a child. Growing up, I also saw that most of our neighbors made at least part of their living from forest products. Everything from Christmas trees and wreaths to pulpwood put food on the table where I grew up. Working with wood from home kept me connected to where I'm from, even as my career kept me moving around the country.

The bowls, blocks, and utensils for sale on this website come straight out of this strong connection to where I'm from. Wood for my bowls and cutting boards comes mostly from the back forty of an old dairy farm near Rib Lake, Wisconsin, which I have owned and managed for 30 years. At my studio in Avondale, Georgia, I also work with salvaged hardwoods, mostly from the streets and backyards of my neighborhood.

I want you to know that I don't just make these items. At our house, we use these cutting boards, bowls, and spoons every day. And we use that experience to constantly refine our designs and techniques. Buy with confidence that you're getting something both beautiful and useful.
